This chapter outlines the production and circulation of silver plate in Macedonia before the Roman conquest during the Macedonian Wars. It includes a comprehensive account of all silver vessels from Macedonia, and those from elsewhere attributed to Macedonian workshops. It examines the silver plate’s origin, evolution, and iconography of figural decoration, and analyses them to detect links between the subject and political or religious issues of the time. Also, the chapter compares the Macedonian silver plate with a wide range of other artefacts, such as pots, bronze and glass vessels, and jewellery of the region and from elsewhere in order to define what is peculiarly Macedonian.
