This chapter discusses the history of transition, the last important exile magazine of the interwar period and one of the most important magazines of its generation. In its 11-year publishing run, transition appeared in 25 issues averaging 200 pages each. With 500 contributors coming from all over the world, transition offered contributions ranging from literature to music, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, philosophy, ethnology, linguistics, cinema, and photography. Many literary and artistic avant-gardes found their way into its pages, the most represented being Anglo-American modernism, Surrealism, Expressionism, Dadaism, but also early-nineteenth-century German Romanticism. Throughout its life, the magazine was faithful to its first editorial statement claiming that ‘contributions will be welcomed from all sources and the fact that an author's name is unknown will assure his manuscript a more favourable examination’.
