In Defense of Dwelling in Great Minds

In Defense of Dwelling in Great Minds

A Few Quotations from Michael Polanyi’s The Study of Man

(p.313) Chapter 18 In Defense of Dwelling in Great Minds
Knowledge and Coordination

Daniel B. Klein

Oxford University Press

This chapter contains passages from Michael Polanyi’s book The Study of Man, published in 1963. One of the passages states that in order to contemplate a person as an ideal is to submit to his authority. People need reverence to perceive greatness, even as people need a telescope to observe spiral nebulae. The passage concludes that people train themselves to the understanding and imitation of the great minds of the past by entering on a framework of expressions and standards.
