This chapter focuses on African American book publishing and bookselling between 1900 and 1920. More specifically, it examines the publishing activities of Sutton Griggs, Kelly Miller, and the Colored Co-operative Publishing Company, along with their role as agents of social change. The chapter begins by looking at the economics of book buying by African Americans before discussing how book publishing and dissemination strategies shaped African American intellectual and literary history during the period. It also highlights the significance of black book culture to race pride and community building at the turn of the century.
