The Global History of Paleopathology

Keith Dobney

Oxford University Press

This chapter presents a biographical sketch of Don Brothwell. This is followed by a discussion of his contributions to bioarchaeology (osteology and paleopathology). Brothwell was perhaps one of the most influential and productive scholars in the field of bioarchaeology. In fact, his research interests and expertise transcend these fields and, as such, it would be fair to say that he represents a true polymath—a pioneer who was one of the first to truly see and apply the potential of combining a plethora of scientific approaches to the discipline of archaeology.
