This chapter presents a biographical sketch of Donald J. Ortner. This is followed by a discussion of his contributions to paleopathology. Donald's significant contributions to the scientific discipline of human skeletal paleopathology fall into three general categories: his outstanding skill and generosity as a teacher; the range of his numerous publications on paleopathology; and his service to the Paleopathology Association (PPA), the primary scholarly society for the discipline.
