This chapter discusses the concept of “women's power” in relation to empresses' roles in Roman aristocracy. Despite being of the “inferior” sex, the empresses Faustnia I and II were able to wield considerable power and influence, even in a militaristic state that would only further undermine them. A woman in their position was able to explore several avenues of power: from seeming vulnerability as one obtaining privileges via the relationship with a husband, to involvement in marriage alliances and succession plans, and even to the right to be portrayed in official coinage.

Keywords:   women's power, Roman aristocracy, militaristic state, coinage, emperor
