This chapter explores the politics of A Chorus Line as an ensemble show in a cosmopolitan world; in which all individuals are regarded as equally important, but in which special skill is required to conform; where all bodies and voices are experienced as equally human, but song and dance on Broadway and in the West End requires particular styles and techniques. Within this framework Dyer’s utopian classification of non-representational signs in musical films is adapted to explore a multicultural politics of diversity.
