This chapter focuses on nationalism in Hindi film songs. After a song analysis, the chapter addresses the deep ambivalence about the cosmopolitanism of film song in India’s early post-colonial nation-building project. It then discusses the general musical characteristics of this period, early music technology, and the rise of the institution of playback singing. The two most important playback singers of this era, Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar, mediated various regional styles of South Asia and came to define the vocal conventions for the next fifty years of film song. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the music director duo Shankar-Jaikishan and an analysis of two of their nationalist songs in the first decade following Indian independence.
