Trust is essential for democracy. A trusting relationship brings advantages, pleasure, and confidence. But it is also necessary to disclose one’s self to the other, and that is the risk of trusting. The chapter treats elements of ethnicity, economic status, gender, and other factors they take into account to judge whom to trust. For most, the internet is no “echo chamber.” They appreciate polemics and stay up all night arguing. Always they are wary that self-disclosure could, as they say, be used to “betray” them. Risk elicits anxiety.
