This chapter reviews research on the interplay between children’s prosocial behaviors and culture. Generally, research in this field has taken a culture-comparative approach, and has identified systematic culture group differences along such broad culture-level dimensions as Individualism-Collectivism. Moreover, this type of research has also allowed for the exploration of the extent to which theoretical models and identified predictors/correlates operate similarly in various cultural contexts. Another research approach that has the potential to shed light on prosocial behavior and culture has been through the use of ethnographic and field-based studies within cultures that might not necessarily focus on prosocial behaviors, but do so indirectly. This type of research has contributed to a more culturally embedded understanding of prosocial behavior as it occurs in the natural setting and in light of the broad sociocultural ecology of the child. Both approaches have furthered our understanding of the complex interaction between culture and prosocial behavior.
