This chapter focuses on that aspect of Mexican ideology which minimizes and excludes blackness from the image of the Mexican nation. It elucidates the myriad contradictions that Veracruzanos of visible African descent and the Veracruz region pose to this ideology. It illustrates how individuals of African descent manage their identities in an ideological context of nonblackness by evading a stable black identity. It also shows how all Veracruzanos collectively participate in distancing both their state and the nation from blackness, thereby reproducing the national ideology.
