Morality and ethics as “how we live, and for what” engages habits of mind and heart as well as hands. These habits surface in human moral experience as recurring moral patterns that have been described as moral theory. This chapter lays out these recurring moral patterns—character ethics, consequences ethics, duty ethics—and examines their logic and tensions. Special attention is given to justice theory and to the changes of method and substance that are necessary in order to shift moral boundaries from the ego to the ecosphere.
