Abstract

The promise of progeny and land to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is the central theological statement in the Pentateuch. This book is an attempt to understand as fully as possible how the promise functions to shape the meaning of the Pentateuch as a whole. It employs and evalutes both synchronic and diachronic approaches to the promise, concentrating particularly on the common literary-historical tendency to view many of the promise texts as secondary insertions.
