The chief research officer’s position within the organization is characterized by the job description, reporting lines, salary negotiations, personal research programs, and legacy considerations. Office organization and staffing are also discussed, with an emphasis on coupling authority and responsibility. Strategies for protecting the scholarly careers of staff associates drawn from the faculty are presented. An analysis of the protocol and etiquette of internal relations with various constituencies, including faculty members, deans, other senior executives, and governing board members concludes with a discussion of the practical need for a power base. Limits to authority imposed by patronage, special requests, passive resistance, and indecisiveness are analyzed from a pragmatic perspective. The chapter ends with a brief discussion about gracefully leaving the office.
