This chapter explores how sex and gender are socially constructed categories and vary according to historical and social context. Providing an overview of the scholarship of masculinities, and examining how this has impacted on how men behave, the chapter provides a comprehensive critical review of how men have been the focus of academic research throughout the twentieth century. Employing hegemony theory to understand the social dominance of heterosexuality and masculinity, this chapter provides a both a solid grounding in and a sophisticated analysis of masculinities studies.
