Below is a list of stories in the Mishnah based on the definition of “story” set forth in chapters 2 and 3. Stories are identified as case stories (C), exempla (Ex), etiological stories (Et), beit midrash stories (B), or other (O). Additionally, I have also marked stories in which the dialog form (D) plays a significant part. In some exempla and case stories the designation is followed by “+D.” This indicates that the standard forms of these stories are followed by a dialog between the rabbi who is the subject of the story and an individual or group who observed the rabbi’s actions. This represents a subgenre of Mishnaic narrative which deserves further study. Some beit midrash stories have the designation “B/D.” These stories are essentially dialogs that meet the criteria for being a full-fledged story. This list is preliminary and is not meant to be an exhaustive catalog of stories in the Mishnah.
