This chapter traces the trajectories of a few important Islamic groups that have spun off from the influential Islamist organization Jamaat-e-Islami in Pakistan to highlight the diverse ways in which Islamism has been reconfigured and reworked. One group of spin-offs has become quite expressly depoliticized, while another has become much more militant than the original. These different trajectories allow a rather dramatic window into the contradictions that Islamism carries within it, and the conditions of possibilities that it holds forth for radically different kinds of politics.
