Islam and the Retrenchment of Turkish Conservatism

(p.109) 4Islam and the Retrenchment of Turkish Conservatism

Oxford University Press

Islamist mobilization in Turkey has evolved into an Islamic conservatism that parallels mainstream Western (especially American) conservatism. After the turn of the century, interpretations of Islam that focus on authority, conformity and national strength have marginalized understandings of Islam that uphold liberties and plurality (“post-Islamism”), just like they have sidelined strict adherence to the scriptures and opposition to secularism (old style Islamism). Moreover, Islamic discourse on social issues has shifted from an emphasis on communal responsibility to a eulogy of individual responsibility. In line with these transformations, old religious foes (Islamists on the one hand and anti-Islamist, conservative Islamic communities such as the Gülen community on the other) have becomes allies.
