Copying the Cantigas de Santa Maria
This chapter addresses the cultural meaning of the copy Palomares made in 1755 of the Toledo codex of the Cantigas de Santa Maria (now in the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid), a thirteenth- century collection of sacred songs in Galician Portuguese attributed to King Alfonso the Tenth of Leon and Castile. The copy was dedicated to the Portuguese consort of Fernando VI, the avid musician Barbara de Braganza. While Palomares transcribed the text into modern script, he faithfully maintained the appearance of the original musical notation. The chapter analyzes the copy closely in comparison to the original, and relates the drawings Palomares included in the copy (including the author portrait of Alfonso X) to the ideals of the reign of Ferdinand VI and of his court also seen in other examples of visual culture produced in Madrid at the time, such as the works of the Italian artist Corrado Giaquinto.
