This chapter examines the passages that Augustine selected to provide a biblical justification for the doctrine of original sin, and how he interpreted them. It considers where in Scripture Augustine believed to have found, in a clearly expressed form, the conception of original sin as he formulated it in his argument against the Pelagians. The chapter attempts to give, by way of illustration, a sense of the problems that came to the fore with regard to the interpretation of the biblical testimonia on which he relied.
