This chapter analyzes the evolution of Augustine's view of marriage and of the role sexual libido plays within marriage. This evolution was accompanied by a corresponding change in his anthropological doctrine, which beginning from a philosophical, especially Neoplatonic, basis took on a more and more biblical, and especially Pauline, character. The process of Augustine's amalgamation of the different ideas is especially complex and problematic.
