This chapter lays out the ontological and epistemological foundations of a critical ethnographic sociolinguistics, arguing for the centrality of the concepts of “discursive space,” “trajectory,” and “resource.” It combines historical, interactionist, interpretivist, and materialist approaches to the analysis of the role of language in the construction of social difference and social inequality in the globalized new economy.
