Mood Concord between CP and IP in Salentino and Southern Calabrian Subjunctive Complements
Salentino and Southern Calabrian have a two complementiser system (declarative and subjunctive) that has been recently analysed in terms of Rizzi’s (1997) split CP framework. Yet, only Salentino cu has complementiser-like features such as Doubly-Filled Comp effects, whereas Southern Calabrian mu is better analysed as an IP internal mood particle. This chapter proposes that subjunctive mood is spelled out in both the CP and IP layer; this hypothesis is shown to correctly predict that Salentino must have other means to mark subjunctive mood in the embedded IP, namely morphological subjunctive mood and embedded auxiliaries, whereas Southern Calabrian spells out the mood feature in CP through the prepositional complementiser pe for. These facts would not receive a unified explanation under a theory in which only one modal element, either in CP or IP, is sufficient to mark the embedded clause as subjunctive.
