Developments in Identity Status Research
This chapter addresses another central issue in self-regulatory research, that of identity development. It provides an overview of Marcia's (1966) influential approach to studying the process of identity formation during adolescence and young adulthood. It demonstrates the power of meta-analytic tools to address critical questions in a maturing literature. Objective reviews of past studies are critical for any scientific field, but they are notoriously difficult to do. The chapter employs meta-analysis to systematically integrate findings from multiple studies to refine our understanding of the links between identity status and other markers of adaptive functioning, such as personality characteristics and relationship functioning, and also to address important questions about the developmental timing and patterning of identity status changes and exploration.
