What Does the Study of Interaction Offer to Emotion Research?
This chapter summarizes some of the results presented in the individual studies in the volume, and discusses them in the context of earlier psychological, social scientific and evolutionary research on emotions. The studies contribute to psychological emotion research by showing the interactional underpinnings of key phenomena such as the emotional valence and arousal, the appraisal processes and action tendencies associated to emotions, the regulation of emotion, and the emotional contagion. The studies also offer empirical specification to central social scientific discussions on emotion, pertaining to emotional work and the social construction of emotions. Furthermore, the studies of this volume demonstrate mechanisms of subtle other-oriented expression and regulation of emotion in interaction between humans; further research is needed to establish the evolutionary origins and functions of these mechanisms.
