This short chapter introduces the cast: seventeen women interviewed in 1993/4 and 2010 whose stories form the basis of this analysis. It provides demographic details, including their personal circumstances, as well as information about their career moves: from employment to self-employment and sometimes back again. The chapter proceeds to provide short pen portraits of all seventeen. These will be used as reference points for the subsequent analysis.
