Armed with the resources of obstinacy, this chapter argues that the so-called ‘logophoric’ solution to Quine’s ‘Giorgione’ puzzle requires the resources of the Theory of Bias. The first sections of this chapter present a ‘semaphoric’ analysis inspired by Graeme Forbes’ logophoric approach, but argue that Forbes’ view yields undesirable consequences if unaccompanied by an account of indexing subscripts as devices of obstinacy. The last section in this chapter discusses the relevance of the biased solution for the analysis of singular terms, and defends the principle of the substitutivity of co-referential expressions.
