Brain electrophysiological methods provide a low-cost non-invasive way to study the neural mechanisms supporting theory of mind reasoning across the lifespan. Here I review studies that use the event-related potential (ERP) techinque to study the neural events that are elicted during different kinds of theory of mind tasks in both adults and children. We also review studies that use resting electroencephalographic (EEG) techniques to study the links between functional brain maturation and theory of mind development in preschoolers. Together, these studies have provided several critical theoretical insights in to the domain-general and domain-specific cognitive mechanisms that support theory of mind reasoning in children and adults.
