(B: Birch 1885–93 Cat. No.; G: Gelling 1976; K: Kemble 1839–48 Cat. No.; S: Sawyer 1968 Cat. No.)

The terms listed and translated here were initially collected using the Old English Microfiche Concordance (Di Paulo and Venezky 1980) and later cross-referenced using the Electronic Sawyer (http://www.esawyer.org.uk/). References to supernatural creatures or entities are listed first (4(i)). These are drawn from the entire corpus of surviving charter-bounds. Excerpts from the bounds of Berkshire (4(ii)), Hampshire (4(iii)), Sussex (4(iv)) and Wiltshire (4(v)) follow. Counties are those that preceded the reorganization of 1974. All known mentions of the following terms: beorg (hill/barrow), burh (stronghold), dic (ditch), hlaw (barrow), and stan (stone). For expediency, only key relevant words are translated here. The interpretation of the Old English terms relies largely on published translations and those offered by the Electronic Sawyer. The entire list has also been checked and some translations revised by Dr John Baker of Nottingham University. The date of the charter is given and the modern place-name and a reference to Sawyer’s 1968 handlist as well as references to the handlists published by Birch and Kemble when relevant.
