Physics on Your Feet: Berkeley Graduate Exam Questions

The chapter covers the topics from mechanics, general physics, heat, and elementary mathematics in the physics context to simple but, at times surprising, phenomena in the day-to-day setting, for instance the physics of hot-dog bending and rupture. Some problems (e.g., Lightbulb and Coal) will teach students how to make back-of-the-envelope estimates, while others (e.g., Ostrich Egg, Joker’s Pendulum, and Slinky Magic) will show methods (such as scaling arguments) to easily solve problems that are difficult to solve via “brute force.”

Keywords:   mechanics, heat, general physics, pendulum, scaling, estimates
