The general properties of Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes are presented. The following aspects of black hole physics are discussed: (a) conditions for the formation of an apparent horizon in gravitational collapse, in particular the Gibbons–Penrose inequality and a precise formulation of the hoop conjecture; (b) scattering properties of high-speed rotating black holes; (c) spontaneous creation of de Sitter universes inside a Schwarzschild black hole; and (d) the effect of metric fluctuations on Hawking radiation.
