This chapter examines China’s transition from a manipulated revolution to a manipulated marketization. It discusses the role of the collective identity system, established after the Great Famine of 1959–60, which empowered the Chinese state to undertake large-scale social experiments through collectivity. Both Mao’s Cultural Revolution and Deng Xiaoping’s marketization were based on this so-called Danwei Society. The chapter concludes that manipulated social changes can be very costly and potentially self-destructive, if not accompanied by the capacity for self-governance for both society and localities.
