The authors reviewed in Chapter 5 do not say much about the role of doctrine or of ‘negative’ forms of experience in ordering the spiritual life. This chapter considers how the thought of Thomas Aquinas and John of the Cross may be introduced, within the context of the theoretical framework developed in Chapters 2 and 3, to make good this deficiency.
