This chapter discusses the law on internal carriage and international carriage. Contracts to carry goods by rail or road within the UK are governed by common law. Carriage by air is governed by statutory instrument closely based on the rules for international carriage. In practice all the contracts are supplemented importantly by standard terms. Absent any contract, internal carriers may have the duties of common carriers at common law. International contracts of carriage are based largely, albeit not entirely, on international agreement found in diplomatic conventions, supplemented where necessary by rules of common law.
