Canada: Taking Life Insurance Abroad

(p.252) Chapter 11 Canada: Taking Life Insurance Abroad
World Insurance

James Darroch

Matthias Kipping

Oxford University Press

This chapter traces the history of Canadian insurance since its origins in the seventeenth century, focusing in particular on the time period after Confederation in 1867, when several British colonies in North America combined to form Canada. It looks at how the industry was shaped by government policies and the resulting financial systems and regulatory regimes at the federal and provincial level. It also explores the choices made by entrepreneurs and managers, resulting in insurance companies with a different scope and scale of activities and different forms of ownership and governance. The chapter examines the influence of the UK and the US on the evolution of the market, both of which, at various points in time, provided knowledge, funding, investment, and sales opportunities as well as competition to Canadian insurance companies. The chronological overview of the development of life and property and casualty insurance is followed by a brief examination of reinsurance in Canada.
