In this chapter, the author discusses the use of music as a metaphor for various non-musical phenomena, as well as the use of metaphors or analogies to provide some insights into the nature of music. In diverse historical periods, music, science and medicine seem to share the same fundamental ‘epistemic styles’ or ‘forms of thought’, the same interpretive models of the natural phenomena, the same metaphors and images. These metaphors are not, or are not only, rhetorical artifices, but have a heuristic role since they can specify and make more comprehensible the fundamental theoretical paradoxes of thought, suggesting some general interpretative models. Having analysed in particular the metaphors of ‘elementary fibres’ and ‘the organism’, the implications that these different metaphors have for the therapeutic application of music is explored.
