The superconducting state arises from an attractive interaction between electrons. The phonon mechanism has been playing a key role in the theory of superconductivity. This mechanism is described in detail, with a focus on T c for various strengths of the interaction. The non-adiabaticity is emphasized, and the problem of an upper limit of T c is discussed.
