This chapter contains a rigorous description of the adiabatic method, which is the foundation of the theory of solids. Based on this description, the electron–phonon interaction, renormalization phenomena, and the dynamic polaronic effect are introduced. It is essential that the scale of the electron–phonon interaction exceeds that for the phonon energy.

Keywords:   adiabatic theory, electron–phonon interaction, renormalization, polaronic states
