The chapter distinguishes the view of forgiveness defended in the book from what is sometimes called ‘unconditional forgiveness.’ Some of the conditions that are relevant to our moral assessment of particular instances of forgiveness are explored. These include, most notably, the forgiving agent’s motives and social context. For example, if the person who is forgiving (or thinking about forgiving) is a victim of systemic injustice or oppression, this may alter our assessment of what they are doing. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the conditions in which it is appropriate to encourage someone to forgive.
