This chapter discusses past scholarship on the Cyclades and how they have often been characterized as poor and insignificant communities during the Classical period. It sets out a methodology for a new approach based on a wide variety of evidence, and provides a summary of the remaining chapters of the book. The chapter also summarizes the debate on the nature of the ancient economy and how a regional study of the Cyclades may contribute to this debate.
