This chapter suggests that the potential advantages of virtual group collaborations among geographically distributed partners, using communication technology, depend on their ability to incorporate and exploit the challenges that technology offers, in order to achieve satisfactory social and instrumental outcomes. The chapter reviews several processes that have traditionally affected groups' functioning, and examines how computer-mediated communication exacerbates or alleviates the issues that groups confront. These issues include impression formation and group development, task-oriented and socioemotional communication and trust. It also includes a discussion of the challenges groups face when seeking to incorporate the unique information that different members contribute to decision-making and problem solving discussions. These issues are examined in traditional group settings as well as in online groups, and their implications for “flashmobs” are considered.
