The Internet and Aggression: Motivation, Disinhibitory, and Opportunity Aspects
This chapter considers the topic of Internet and aggression. It describes research on the intersection of two domains, the Internet, its structure and function, and the social psychology of aggression. While the Internet is an environment of instant connections and opportunity, it is also an instrument of great social and personal penetration. The chapter goes on to define aggression, particularly as it relates to studying the Internet. Next, it focuses on the social psychological processes related to aggression. There are several characteristics of the Internet world that accentuate risk of aggressive behavior. Social Learning Theory is especially useful in understanding the elements of this environment. The discussion of the Internet as a teaching tool is organized within a framework of motivational, disinhibitory, and opportunity aspects. The chapter goes on to show that the Internet is a human communication environment with certain unique characteristics that can activate and shape various psychological mechanisms, many of these increasing the potential for aggression.
