This chapter explores how implication and expectation in music work, using zygonic theory. A model is constructed that acknowledges the potential implications arising from three sources of regularity in music: patterns within groups of notes, and between them, as encoded in working and long-term memory, both veridically and schematically. Various forms of interaction between these sources of music-structural information are mooted. The model is tested in two experimental conditions: the first in which subjects were required to sing what they regarded as likely continuations of a melody that was built up a note at a time, and the second using a rating protocol for the perceived expectedness of each note of a melodic motif on first and second-time hearings. The results lend initial support to the model, and suggest refinements to it.
