The phylum Gastrotricha consists of roughly 500 described species of microscopic, aquatic animals, and has traditionally been divided into the marine Macrodasyoida and the marine or limnic Chaetonotoida. Hermaphroditism is common to all species, which possess either hermaphroditic gonads or separate testes and ovaries. The embryology of a few species representing both Macrodasyoida and Chaetonotoida has been well documented, and the best known is that of the macrodasyoid Turbanella. Neogossea and Lepidodermella are examples of chaetonotoids. A number of recent studies suggest that Gastrotricha has sister-group relationships with rotifers, gnathostomulids, or platyhelminths.
