This chapter sheds light on power-related issues in mergers and acquisitions (M&A). A brief overview of the ways in which power has been treated in management and organization studies is provided. This is followed by an analysis of the ways in which power and politics have been conceptualized in different strands of the M&A literature, focusing on motives and performance, employee concerns, cultures and cultural politics, identities and identification, institutions, legitimation and discursive struggles, and marginalization and exclusion. Seminal studies in the field, where the treatment of power is often implicit, are revisited. Classics in M&A literature are re-read in terms of how they (seem to) conceptualize power, and examples are also provided of more explicit takes on power and politics in the M&A context. Important contributions are highlighted, but also some of the limitations of extant theorizing are pointed out.
