History always played an important role in monasticism. This chapter discusses the new and critical modes of historiographical scholarship which influenced the German Benedictines, especially the erudition of the French Benedictine congregation of St. Maur, and the attempts of monks like Bernhard Pez to initiate similar research projects. However, this new understanding of historical scholarship gave rise to the growth of historical consciousness which also entailed an increasingly critical view of monastic and religious traditions.
