This chapter reports on continuing work with the group of 8- to 9-year-old children in The Laboratory for Making Things. Sarah, Ruth, and Stanley from the previous group are joined by two new children, Rose and Sidney. Like the others, Rose and Sidney are having trouble working with common symbolic expressions such as written language, numbers, graphs, and also the conventions of music notation.
