Clinical Use of Music in Operating Theatres
Many if not most patients undergoing medical treatment in hospital operating theatres suffer from complex sets of conditions including pain, anxiety, and distress, and even aggressive noncompliance. The term operating theatre, as it is used in this chapter, entails a wide range of settings where invasive and emotionally aversive medical interventions are carried out. Music is increasingly used in operating theatres for specific purposes of alleviating patients' physical and emotional conditions before, during, and after surgeries. This chapter aims to address available empirical evidence to support the use of music in operating theatres and to assess underlying mechanisms explaining how and why music may be suitable for use in these specific settings.
