This chapter does for the connection and loop variables what is done for the metric variables in Chapter 5. Loop quantum gravity is discussed in detail. Its canonical variables are holonomies and fluxes. A central role in the formalism is played by the spin network states, which are discussed at length. Particular attention is focused on the quantization of area operators and its consequences. The quantum Hamiltonian constraint is discussed and the limits of our understanding are disclosed in a transparent way.
